Scott Logic enters Mix10K competition

Six of Scott Logic’s consultants have submitted entries for Mix10K, a competition organised by Microsoft to demonstrate smart coding by creating a web application using no more than 10 kilobytes of code.

Colin Eberhardt’s Silverlight entry Old Skool Demo is a throwback to the days of the Amiga demo, featuring scrolling text, a starfield, interference patterns and plasma. Even the MP3 music for this entry is included in the 10k size!

Chris Price’s HTML5 entry 100pxls transforms a stream of live Twitter posts into a wall of tiny 10×10 pixel images. The image shown is determined by common words in the post, or you can convert an image into a tweet and then post it. Any standard Twitter search can be used to find images on the wall.

Gergely Orosz’s Silverlight entry SilverCooler puts the ‘mix’ into Mix10k with an application that lists recipes for refreshing soft drinks that can be made from sodas and juices.

Simon Key’s HTML5/Gestalt entry 10k Cellular Automata supports rulesets for generating dozens of cellular automata, including the classic Game of Life.

Adrian Conlin’s HTML5 entry Word.Cloud.10k generates a cloud showing the relative frequency of words in any piece of provided text.

Luke Page’s Silverlight entry Fract Out is a game inspired by the Amiga classic Qix, in which the user has to enclose rectangles without getting hit by one of the balls.

The prize for the winning entry is a trip to the Mix10k conference in Las Vegas. The winners are announced by February 15, so we wish all of our entrants good luck!
