Developer Community Day (Scotland)

Phil Pounder, May 10th, 2010

On Saturday Scott Logic attended the annual DDD Scotland event, organised by the Scottish Developers user group. This event is free to attendees due to the generosity of a number of sponsors and Scott Logic were proud to help out by providing the bags for the welcome packs.

DDD Scotland Event

Almost 300 developers from all over the UK travelled to Glasgow to be inside on a beautiful sunny spring day and learn and network with other developers. There was some really high quality content including a great primer on HTML 5 from Craig Nicol, a session on “Exception Driven Development” by Phil Winstanley and Liam Wesley‘s talk on commercial software development.

Reflecting the recent increase in interest in Silverlight as a technology and platform choice, there were two talks on Silverlight. Mike Taulty came up from Microsoft to talk about what’s new in Silverlight 4 and there was an excellent session from Ray Booysen on “Real World” Silverlight usage. Ray’s first slide had the strap line “Hello World != Real World” and he went on to argue that while Silverlight is an excellent platform, writing non-trivial, testable and performant business applications is still quite hard. Ray shared some ‘Silverlight Gotcha’s that he’d experienced first hand and demonstrated some advanced debugging techniques.

It was an excellent day of high quality technical content and kudos is due to all the DDD Scotland team. Many thanks for all your work and see you next year!
