Chris

Graduate Developer, Newcastle

I first heard about Scott Logic during the third year of my degree, an MEng in Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of York. Scott Logic were offering a summer internship trying out new technologies related to the financial software sector they operate in. This seemed like a chance to pick up some valuable experience so I applied and fortunately was accepted.

During the internship I was one of five interns working on different projects, all of which were themed around providing client access to view and edit portfolios. My project involved experimenting with different techniques and technologies to investigate the best way of allowing a Java backend to talk to a native C# client. The project introduced me to XML, SOAP, .NET, J2EE, Axis, AJAX, SQL, and many other things that weren’t part of my degree, but are widely used in the real world. I really enjoyed the internship and got a real taste for working as part of a development team. An unexpected bonus came when I found that the skills I’d picked up also helped a lot with my final year project.

Thanks to the internship, I was offered a job as a graduate developer within the company. This role now involves not only re-using much of what I learnt during my previous time with the company, but also learning a lot more about client communication and relationships, and also about the financial sector. Day to day I develop advanced web applications that allow financial analysts to quickly mine vast data sources, looking for specific characteristics which they in turn use to manage their portfolios.

Scott Logic has been a great transition into the real world of software development. The team is full of enthusiastic people, the environment is really relaxed and there’s always someone with the experience to help with any technical problem.
