Applications for the 2012 programme are open!

We recruit the best – today’s graduates can quickly become tomorrow’s leaders.

Here are some of our team who joined through previous graduate programmes:

Joel

After completing my Mathematics and Computer Science degree at Newcastle University, I was keen to stay in the Newcastle region and develop the programming skills I had learnt at University. I wanted to work in a friendly company where I could work alongside and learn from more experienced programmers. I wanted the prospect of getting involved in all areas of a product life-cycle and experience a variety of different areas of software development. Scott Logic fulfils all these criteria. The people I work with are very friendly and always willing to help out and teach me new ideas. There’s a great working atmosphere and good social opportunities as well; from playing squash on a lunch time to going to the pub on a Friday after work.

Since starting, it’s been very hands on. I started off working on developing a mobile optimised market data website in HTML5. From there I quickly progressed onto other projects and am now onto my second client project – building a new public facing website for a large investment bank. This involves working with a number of technologies and I am involved in developing both the front and back end of the application.

I’ve really enjoyed my time at Scott Logic and I look forward to developing my skills and career further over the years.

Robat

I joined Scott Logic after completing a Masters degree in Enterprise Computing at Newcastle University. The graduate programme here caught my attention with the promise of interesting and challenging work using the latest technologies, and a good working environment. After meeting some of the people here early on, I was convinced that it would make a great place to start my career.

In my time here so far, I’ve worked on a variety of client and internal projects – mainly web applications based on J2EE. For my first project, I worked in a small team to deliver enhancements to an equity research web application for a leading investment bank. I’m currently working on a long term project in a large distributed team to create a new website and a suite of integrated web applications for the asset management division of another investment bank. Even in the relatively short amount of time I’ve been here, my role has developed to include responsibility for specific areas of projects and more direct contact with clients. The support, advice and encouragement of my colleagues here at Scott Logic has been invaluable to me along the way.

There is a genuine recognition of the importance of personal development here, and the company has supported me in gaining certification as a Java developer. I’ve also received training on various technical and non-technical topics that has been very useful.

Chris

I applied to join Scott Logic during my final year at Durham University, where I studied Computer Science.  I had heard many positive things about the company from some of my lecturers and was immediately intrigued when I noticed an advertisement for graduate recruitment on the departmental mailing list.

Since being recruited as a graduate, I have been given the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, ranging from mobile to large scale enterprise applications. I have already worked on many client projects, with some of the largest names in the industry. I’ve also been lucky enough to interview new candidates applying for roles at the company and have been afforded the time to produce technical articles and blog posts around areas of my own interest.

Working at Scott Logic has been a valuable experience and has improved my knowledge of development massively. The work is technically challenging, but stimulating and there is always someone available to help out and offer their expertise. Operating alongside senior developers and those with much more experience has taught me a lot about the industry and I look forward to continuing to learn more in future years with the company.

James

I joined Scott Logic on the graduate scheme in August 2010, after studying Computing Systems at Warwick. As I wanted to move back to Newcastle after graduating, I discovered Scott Logic while researching graduate schemes in the area. I was attracted to the company by the obvious drive to deliver high quality systems to some of the biggest names in finance, and since joining have learnt that this certainly is the case.

The initial couple of months involved working with the other graduates on an internal project, from gathering the requirements right through to the delivery. This was a great help in learning how projects work in the real world, and introduced us to a lot of techniques and methodologies used in the company. Following from this introductory project, I then moved onto another internal project, which introduced a number of new technologies including Silverlight, WPF and C#. Despite not having used any of these before, there was always plenty of experienced developers around to help out or answer any questions.

Six months after joining Scott Logic, I moved onto my first client project, which involved extending their existing desktop trading application to introduce new tradable instruments. All the training and support to that point really helped the transition to client work, and the support is still available for any day to day questions, either financial or technical. I have since moved onto another project for the same client, which has involved collaborating with developers at the client site, with daily phone conferences helping improve communication skills and gain confidence in client interaction.
